The Battle Of Self-discipline

April 30, 2009

Many people struggle to break bad habits from their past and to create new, healthy habits for their future. It is much easier to continue living in the ways that are normal for us than to battle our way to a better life. If, for example, we are used to watching endless hours of television each night it will certainly be hard for us to win the battle of breaking that habit. It will be even harder to replace television with constructive and healthy ways of spending time such as exercising or reading. The battle to discipline ourselves is certainly one of the toughest battles that we face. It is much easier just let our lives happen than it is to be intentional in our choices and to proactively form habits rather than sit back while our habits are formed for us. The road to self-discipline must begin with a deep sense of conviction. We must be convinced not only that victory in the battle is possible, but also that winning the battle of disciplining our lives is important. We will never remain long at a task we think is unimportant. It will always be the things that we place the highest...

Fit Is Simply Not Enough If You Are Fat

March 9, 2009

Being fit but fat is simply not good enough. Excess weight can take years off your life, even if you get plenty of exercise. This was the finding of a study published in 2004 in New England Journal of Medicine. The study was based on questionnaires used in the Nurses Healthy Study, which followed more than 116,000 female nurses for 24 years, and on death certificates and medical records. Women who were active but obese had almost twice the risk of death of women who were both active and lean. Women who were sedentary but slender were 55 percent more likely to die early. Those who were both sedentary and obese were almost 250 percent more likely to die. Being physically active did not cancel out the increased mortality of overweight. Being lean did not counterbalance the risk effect of being sedentary. The findings would probably apply to men as well, as indicated by the study. If you are lean but you are sedentary, do not fool yourself. You are still at risk. You need to get physical active. This is the warning given by one of the researcher. He also opposed the suggestion that if you are...

Build Confidence With Strategies That Really Work

February 2, 2009

Wouldn t it be grand if we could just wake up in the morning, brush our teeth and put on our confidence for the day. Well, for those of us who don t have a drawer full, here are 4 simple strategies that will help you build confidence. Accentuate the positive. Be your own best friend. What do you tell a friend who s tried something new, whether or not it turned out well. At least you tried something new- good for you. Accentuate the effort it took in doing something, rather than the final outcome. You d do it for your best friend, wouldn t you. We all have limitations. The key is to accept that you have them without dwelling on them. Don t be afraid to take some risks. When you are about to embark on a new experience, do you spend your time worrying so much about the outcome you aren t enjoying the moment. If you look at new things in your life as a chance to learn something, it opens up the possibility of you becoming good at that something. If you spend your time dreading the outcome, you ll turn any opportunity there might have been into a failure. What s more, we can t grow when we are...

The Quality Of Hospital Food

December 25, 2008

In this article I write about the quality, or lack of it, in the food that is served in some of the UK hospitals. My nan has recently died in hospital which has been very upsetting for my family. She was hit by one of the famous hospital bugs and became very weak. She was in need of some decent food which would have helped to build up her strength. What she received was basically so poor and tasteless that she found it hard to eat. Despite many attempts by various members of the family to pursuade her to eat more, she could not stomach it and kept saying that it the food had no taste and that it was disgusting. I have to admit that it was not exactly tempting when I saw what was being dished out. In the UK we are very lucky in the standard of our hospitals when you compare it to many other countries in the world. Our country is very rich but a lot of this cash is being wasted on certain projects. Surely people in our hospitals deserve a much higher standard of food, food which they can look forward to eat. I have recently watched a program about how Jamie Oliver is trying to improve the...
